You take a chance and send out an application figuring you won't get your first choice job. But you'll never know if you don't try, right? Well I now know. This week I got a call from planned parenthood offering me a job. It was the perfect opportunity to get clinic experience without a degree. I would actually be able to work in the clinic and help patients get started. Here I had assumed they just forgot about my application and weren't interested. The lady on the phone told me that my application stuck out to her because I said that I was interested in Genetic Counseling, and she had 2 previous people work in this position and go on to become genetic counselors.
As she talked to me my heart was beating so fast with excitement and my jaw was about to hit the floor... Then she asked how many hours a week I could work starting this fall. I told her 10, maybe 15. She appologized and told me that she needed someone that could work at least 25 hours a week. I briefly considered and did the math in my head. There's no way. "I hate to have to turn this down" I told her, but she said she understood. She suggested that I volunteer there instead, and see if that will be enough.
Although I hated turning her down, I looked at the positive end... I was offered the job, and had no experience! It made me feel good that I could demonstrate my reasons for wanting the job enough to be offered a position.
